My Pythonic desktop

Maybe it is because I like the language. Maybe is is because Ubuntu is a great pusher of Python. But the number of Python applications running all the time on my computer is increasing every time. First it was just TimeTracker, my own application to track time working on projects. Then came Quod Libet, the best player I know. And now I’m using Gajim, since we can only use Jabber now. The only thing that could be Python and it isn’t is my RSS reader: right now I’m using Liferea instead of Straw, since the former looks better.

Maybe that’s why I’m always running out of memory on this computer. :)

Edit 1: Oh, and for personal notes, I’m using Newton, a personal wiki that works as an applet, also written in Python. I still don’t get why write it as an applet, but I’m using it anyway.

Edit 2: Also, I’m playing GNOME Sudoku, which is also a Python application.

The Untouchables

I swear I tried to see the DVD earlier, but for some weird reason, it doesn’t work on my computer. When I finally got my DVD Player (it was with my mom), I finally could see The Untouchables again. Not that I didn’t see it before: every time I find out it would be aired on television, I know it is time to get the popcorn and be ready to stay 2 hours in front of it.

So, what’s new on this DVD? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. No deleted scenes, no interviews, no director’s comments. Just the movie, plain and simple. Is it bad? Call me nuts, but the movie itself is enough to make anyone buy the DVD.

Let’s talk a little bit about the movie, since it is the only thing here: It tells the story of how Al Capone, the biggest gangster of USA history, was put behind the bars by Eliot Ness and his Untouchables. Maybe the story doesn’t make much sense to us here in Brazil, but that doesn’t ruin the story. It has its own life.

Acting is very good. I think it is the best job of Kevin Costner. Sean Connery still playing the old professor does a good job, but the guy was born to play roles like that. Even Charles Martim Smith does a pretty good interpretation of the accounting turned into cop. Andy Garcia, as usual, has a “so and so” acting.

One of the things that always get my attention is how the camera works near the end of the movie. It goes from the normal view to some “first person” view, following Elliot attention. This gives a good idea of how personal things are turning in the movie, as you can see how Eliot is feeling about the whole story. Also, as any Ennio Morricone work, the music plays a good deal of emotion, with the right tone, all through the movie.

A master piece, no doubt.

John Lennon – Happy Christmas (War Is Over)

So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
Ans so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear
And so this is Christmas
For weak and for strong
For rich and the poor ones
The world is so wrong
And so happy Christmas
For black and for white
For yellow and red ones
Let’s stop all the fight
A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear
And so this is Christmas
And what have we done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
Ans so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young
A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear
War is over over
If you want it
War is over
Now…
