Most misleading acronym ever

“PC”.

How many times did you see “PC” when someone actually meant “Windows”? Several times I’ve seen this and can’t stop getting upset by it. Is my x86 running Linux not a PC, then? OF COURSE IT IS! Isn’t a Macintosh a PC? SURPRISE, IT IS!

PC stands for “personal computer”. My Laptop is a personal computer, no matter which operating system it runs or what architecture it runs. PC is a concept, not an architecture. PC is in the same level of MID (Mobile Internet Devices, a.k.a. what the N800 is).

And it really pisses me off when “news for nerds” uses it on a headline.

Starship Troopers

Robert A. Heinlein wrote a book about the army of the future. It became a movie, which everyone says it is crap, which I can’t agree: it had explosions, it has nice CGIs and it had Dina Meyer, although she died in the middle of the movie. Anyway, I like the movie, so why not read the book?

And, as any book adaptation to the silver screen, some bits are completely lost: half of the book is about the training days, and the whole book is about Rico’s point-of-view of the war and the military life. In a way, the first half of the book looks a lot like things Skippy can’t do, while the rest looks a lot more about Heinlein views of the political affairs. And that’s something I really hate on fiction books. Like when Victor Hugo decided that he should tell how great Napoleon was, losing just one battle because his commanders didn’t saw a hole in the battle field, right in the middle of “Les Miserables”. The point is not “author putting his point of view in a fiction book”, but “author putting his point of view in a fiction book when such PoV doesn’t change shit in the history”. In the case of Heinlein, he filled the book with discussions about how the military would be better voters, how the politics finally worked (in his universe) when the military where above the civilians and such, hidden in discussions in “History and Moral Philosophy” classes (which the narrator has to go twice in the book). Remove such pieces and you lose nothing about the story itself.

All in all, the book is very easy to read, although some situations are hard to believe, even in the future.

Soccer supporters are the direct inverse of religion extremists

After seeing some posts in a friends blog, I came to the conclusion that the extreme soccer supporter is the direct inverse of the extreme religious person.

See, when something good happens to a religious person, he/she say “It happened thanks to God” (it was not this person will or desire who got it: someone Else made it happen), when a soccer team wins, a supporter says “We won!” (notice that the person include himself/herself in the victory).

Now, when something bad happens, the religious person say “I didn’t pray with enough will” (now it is this person fault for failure) while the supporter says “Crappy team! They lost again!” (this time, he is not part of the failure.)

Fortunately, there are a lot more people in the middle than in the extremes (although I’m not so sure about 90% of the Brazilian population and the soccer part of this.)

Anoter silver screen presentation of a game

When I read DeSanto Develops Heroes Film my first thought was “Oh, you mean The Series? After just one season? Remarkable!”. Then I read the text and saw that it is based on the City of Heroes game.

Now we all know that there is not a single game-to-silver-screen conversion that worked (“Mortal Kombat”? “Tomb Raider”?) but look at the premise of City of Heroes: a city with several heroes, with several different powers. There is no way to screw with this. And, if DeSantos manage to screw it, the guy surely deserves an award for it.

GPL isn’t understood even inside the open source community

(If you can call Linspire part of the open source community anyway.)

It looks like, as Mark Shuttleworth, Kevin Carmony likes to post open letters to the community. The only difference, though, is that Carmony doesn’t understand the basics, like what the GPL really means.

In the letter above, Carmony complains that the new GPL (version 3) will reduce choices. The problem is, the current version actually allow people to give you less choices, not the other way around. You see, the thing that GPL3 tries to prevent is the, as RMS say, Tivolisation. This is when you force the code to act one way and only one way; if the user changes that way, the system will not work anymore. In the end, this means less choices to the user, which is the main concern of the GPL (it is not about choices for vendors, it is about more choices to end users). If the source is available, but you can’t change, where is your freedom and your choices? You have none, and you’ll end up trapped into a vendor lock-in again.

The scary part of it is that most of users in the forums really don’t get it and go way far into the wrong road than Carmony.

As far as I know (and anyone can help me in this one), Linspire didn’t returned anything to the community. They put a distribution together, that’s true, but they don’t put anything else besides that into the poll of options. They don’t fix bugs, they don’t write new applications and they don’t put patches around, which is something Canonical is really doing with Ubuntu (there are several patches to several projects available, and there is also a free, GPLed, distribuited source control system). It doesn’t mean that Canonical is pure: Rosetta, the translation application for GNU applications is not free; Launchpad, the system that merges several different bug tracking systems into one (so you have a central point to get patches, bug reports and related stuff) is not free (although there are promises that it will be freed some time). But, in the end, Linspire didn’t play with the community and, as you can see by the open letter, Carmony seems really interested in his own business, not the community and not their own users.

Honestly, I don’t know what Carmony is worried about. The fact is that they don’t contribute and, so, the worry about the GPL should fall over developers shoulders.
