My medical exams show that I have a problem with tryptophan.
Tryptophan is an essential amino acid involved in human nutrition.
For many organisms including humans, tryptophan is an essential amino acid. This means that it cannot be synthesized by the organism and therefore must be part of its diet. The principle function of amino acids including tryptophan are as building blocks in protein biosynthesis. In addition, tryptophan functions as a biochemical precursor for the following:
- Serotonin (a neurotransmitter), via tryptophan hydroxylase. Serotonin, in turn, can be converted to melatonin (a neurohormone), via N-acetyltransferase and 5-hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase.
- Niacin via kynurenine and quinolinic acids as key biosynthetic intermediates.
In the central nervous system, serotonin is believed to play an important role in the regulation of anger, aggression, body temperature, mood, sleep, vomiting, sexuality, and appetite. Low levels of serotonin may be associated with several disorders, namely increase in aggressive and angry behaviors, clinical depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), migraine, irritable bowel syndrome, tinnitus, fibromyalgia, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders and intense religious experiences.
Melatonin appears to have some use against circadian rhythm sleep disorders, such as jet lag and delayed sleep phase syndrome.
Honestly, it looks like I had this problem for a long time.
