Losing wisdom
[Caution: Pain and gore details follow. Do not keep reading if you have a weak stomach.]
Facts you need to know:
- For most of my teen years, I really didn’t care about my teeth;
- When I was a simple child, my mum used to take me to dentist from time to time (where I had to apply flour, which I absolutely hated.)
- When I was about 25 years old, I had to face a dentist with the drill (an experience that even today makes me sick when I remember the smell of burned bone.)
- Even that I’m 30-something now, I still have a deep (irrational) fear of dentists.
So, two weeks ago:
- I was eating an apple.
- It felt like a small piece got stuck in the end of my mouth, near my wisdom tooth.
- Using my finger, I felt that the tooth was broken.
- The idea of having to go to a dentist made me feel a cold feeling in my spine.
Last week:
- I went to a dentist near work to make an appointment.
- The appointment was set to Monday this week.
Last Monday:
- I went to the dentist, completely scared.
- He checked my wisdom tooth and said that it was broken because it was growing in the wrong direction.
- He gave me some local anesthesia and pull the tooth out.
- After I realized what he did, I start shaking and, on the way out, I realized I was drenched in sweat.
- I had tickets for Joe Satriani in that night[1].
There you have the events till this Monday. I had to have my wisdom tooth extracted ’cause it was growing in the wrong direction (towards the molars.) It was the top left, if you are really curious, but I may have to extract all four.
The worst part of it wasn’t having the tooth extracted. The worst part is that us, animals, bleed when some piece of our natural bodies is removed. And, due the location of such removed part, I had a full night of blood going down my throat. And ’cause the thing had to heal itself, I couldn’t drink anything for 2 hours after that and couldn’t eat anything 6 hours after that. And, just because I was fucking scared, I decided not even drink before 6 hours. Try drink blood (even slowly) for 6 hours to see how you feel.
But, in the end, 3 days after that, I can eat and drink like nothing did happen. And, honestly, I’m waiting for Monday, ’cause now I know what things work and I want to test myself and see if I can manage to have another tooth removed the old way.
